Our Solution:Our solution is to team up with a restaurant and print qr-codes after dishes on their menu. The qr-code will then lead to a google doc which will have the detailed list of ingredients, that restaurants might not put on their menus, and the top allergens it includes. This way people can quickly make an informed decision about what is safe for them to eat. In addition, if the ingredients in a dish ever changes the chef can just update the database once and the restaurant doesn’t have to reprint a ton of menus. Our community of focus are people with food allergies who eat out at restaurants.

The Data:A small number of restaurants have allergen menus that allow people with food allergies to make an informed decision about what is safe for them to eat. Although, most of these menus are online and the waiters are the ones who control them.
New technology, such as HotSchedules, has been made to make it possible for restaurant staff to easily find ingredients and allergen information on an iPad or mobile device. This helps them provide complete and correct information to people with food allergies. These changes provided by new technology gives people trust in the menu which leads to more customers with food allergies to be happy with their dining experience. |
Timeline:During our first week we talked with a restaurant about their dishes, and we chose a few to make qr-code for. We also worked on our website. During the second through fourth week we built the google-doc that shows the list of ingredients of the dishes we chose. During the fifth week we will reprint the menus with the qr-code we added. On one night we will go to the restaurant with our families and a few of our friends. We will also give the menus to people at school so they can test our solution. During the final week we will send out a survey to everyone who tested our menu to see how well it worked .

Budget + Partners + Collecting DataAt the beginning of our project we worked with FARE to get information about the problem. After this we needed to partner with a restaurant to implement our solution. The restaurant we are partnering with is the Griffin Club. Our method of collecting data is to have our families and a few of our friends come to the restaurants one night to test our allergy-safe menu. We will also give the menu to a few other people to have them test it. We will then send a survey to all the people who tested our menu to see if it they understood the concept and it made it easier in any way for them to eat out. Finally, we do not have a budget because all our resources are provided by our school.
